About NERSA
NERSA Identity

The logo depicts a transformation from effective and efficient electricity regulation to that of world-class energy regulation.

It is comprised of four colours from the South African flag. The typeface of origin of the logo is uni-sol, but it has been slightly modified to give it a modern edge.

The blue symbolises NERSA's corporate involvement and regulating voice, bringing a stable environment to the regulation  of energy. It also shows where NERSA comes from in termsof regulatory status, namely the old NER (National Electricity Regulator).

Green symbolises the vast national resources of South Africa and how NERSA strives to regulate energy in such a way as to preserve these resources. It also symbolises the growth and potential awaiting us in the future.

The acronymic breakdown phrase at the bottom of the logo namely, "National Energy Regulator of South Africa" is black in colour symbolising the firm foundation upon which NERSA is built. Also it embodies what NERSA stands for, namely being the national source of efficient and effective energy regulation.

NERSA FLAME- The flame shows a simple, steady flow of energy and light rather than a complex portrayal. It is a minimalistic design that portrays an upward movement that signifies ‘leadership’ and ‘strength’ as well as ‘looking to the future’ as opposed to pointing downwards.

HOW DOES THE NERSA FLAME SIGNIFY REGULATION?- Not only is the flame pointing upwards, but it ‘never dies’- it is always watchful. NERSA as regulator of the energy industry is continuously watching and regulating over the piped-gas, petroleum pipeline and electricity industries. In addition, the themes of ‘keeping a light’ (for areas with no light) and ‘putting the light where you can see it’ (for all to see it) shows NERSA’s mandate to ensure that transformation is key and development areas are looked at.

WHY IS THE FLAME PLACED ON TOP - Again, the icon being on top shows the ‘watchfulness’ of the regulator. It also shows that it is regulating other sectors and that the entire logo (NERSA) is lit up by the flame, hence by its own vision, mission and mandate. If the icon was beside the logo, it would create the impression that the depiction of a ‘guardian’ is only a side profile, and not a main theme of NERSA’s positioning in the market place. It creates a clear impression of a leader in the industry. Finally, the progression from NER to NERSA is shown by the flame being situated exactly between the NER and SA showing the transformation.

CHOICE OF COLOURS- The colours used in the NERSA logo are green, yellow, blue and black as in the South African national flag. The fifth colour, white, provides a background in all respects. The descriptors for these colours are as follows:

Green - Ecological awareness and regard for the land we live on.

Yellow - Creative, problem solving, forward thinking in all processes, flame or spark of an idea.Yellow is also representative of the natural resources within South Africa.

Blue - This colour firstly reinforces the corporeality and official voice of NERSA where-after it could be related to the open skies and the freedom associated therewith in terms of growth, our current position and the freedom that NERSA would like to cultivate through proper energy usage.

Black- It is a grounding colour, tying the whole logo together and almost drawing a line beneath the NERSA logo offering it a platform to stand on.

In order to contextualise the region in which energy is regulated the South African flag in its original colours will be used.
