Professor Divya Singh is an admitted Advocate of the High Court of South
Africa and admitted Member of the Bar Council. She holds a BA (Law) and
LLB both awarded cum laude and LLM from the University of Durban Westville.
Prof Singh served as an academic and Head of Private Law in the Faculty
of Law at the University of Durban-Westville for 10 years before joining
Technikon South Africa in 2000 as Executive Director: Police Practice.
Prof Singh has received accolades for her outstanding performance in her
field. She received an award from the Federal Bureau of Investigation
for exceptional service in the public interest; the South African Association
of Women Graduates acknowledged her excellent achievement in research,
the Advice Desk for the Abused recognised her zealous performance for
community service commitment and finally receiving an award from the Natal
law Society for academic excellence.
Before her appointment as an NER Board Member, she also served as a Member
of the Board of the Advice Desk, an NGO in KwaZulu-Natal and Member of
the Criminological Association of South Africa.
She has a strong research profile in various aspects of law and has researched
on 'Defending Battered Women Who Kill'. She unashamedly admits to a zealous
passion for the subject and has worked with NGOs, the Law Commission and
government departments to raise awareness about intimate abuse.
Prof Singh has been a Board Member of the National Electricity Regulator
(NER) since 2001 and has served in the following committees of the NER
Board: Chairperson of the Licensing, Compliance and Customer Services;
Member of the Human Resource; Chairperson of the Human Resource; Member
of the Audit and Risk; and Member of the Finance Committee of the NER
(2005).
Prof Singh is currently employed as the Director of School of Criminal
Justice at the University of South Africa (UNISA). In October 2005, she
was appointed by the Minister of Minerals and Energy as part-time Regulator
Member of the National Energy Regulator (NERSA).
